THE JEANS’ STORY
Levi Strauss, a German who emigrated to the United States of America, invented the classic jeans. In 1853, he moved to San Francisco due to the Gold Rush and from then on earned his money by selling haberdashery and textiles. To cater for the numerous miners digging for gold, he expanded his range to include practical things like toothbrushes, braces and buttons. The resourceful businessman soon realised what was missing in the miners’ provisions: extremely hard-wearing trousers that could withstand the hard work in the mines. However, Strauss's first designs for work trousers made of cotton sailcloth proved not to be robust enough. In 1872, he was approached by the tailor Jacob Davies. Davies wanted to make the trouser seams more sturdy using rivets but did not have the money to patent the process. Levi Strauss supported his idea and supplied him with bales of cloth. One year later, he got the patent: jeans were born.
In the years that followed, jeans had penetrated the market so far they had made their way even into army clothing. Eventually, jeans became well known in Europe too thanks to American soldiers during the Second World War. Initially scorned, the fashionable trousers soon became hugely popular - not least because film stars like James Dean and Marlon Brando made men’s jeans famous. These days, scarcely any other item of clothing is as well established in the fashion world - they are a timeless classic.
